With spring only being one week away it’s finally time to say goodbye to winter and hello to warmer weather. For all of us to put away our heavy marshmallow coats and boots and trade them in for lightweight jackets and cardigans. And I would be doing that if I lived in a place where winter didn’t last until April. These weird months of February and March can have some really warm days but then dump a foot of snow on you the next day. You don’t know how to dress.
A great way to transition your wardrobe is to pair a heavier fabric with chiffon, poplin, or suede. It’s important to pick breathable fabrics, but also those with enough weight. In my picture above I am wearing a great outfit for this cold but sunny day. I have a very heavy textured knit cardigan, a light pastel chiffon tank top, light wash skinny jeans, and a pair of my favorite white loafers. I was perfectly fine going outside like this too! and that is coming from the girl who is always cold.
I for one am completely ready for winter to be over so that I don’t have to wear bulky knit sweaters and boots every day to work. Spring is one of my favorite times of the year because you’re not freezing but you’re also not sweating from the sun. You can wear pastel colors, fun flats, and ripped jeans with confidence that you’ll be comfortable all day long. It’s nice to have a wardrobe transition period where you can combine your winter and summer wardrobe. You can pair your winter cardigans with summer tank tops and pair them with loafers for a perfect springtime outfit.
I have put together a guide on how to start transitioning your outfits to incorporate more spring pieces. You will be amazed how a simple switch from a long sleeve top to a cute tank top will change up your look.
1. Slowly Add some color to your wardrobe
Add a light blue scarf or a pair of hot pink flats to an all black outfit for a look that says “I’m totally ready for winter to be over and for spring to be here”. Shop for sweaters that have more color in them, not just a plain grey or black. Get your floral accessories out and start thinking about how you can wear them to spruce up an outfit. Also, from personal experience, I have found that when I start incorporating fun and bright colors into my winter outfits, I am in a better mood all day. It’s not a terrible day because my pink scarf is fun and makes me happy.
2. Ditch the winter coat
It may still be too cold to ditch the coat altogether, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in your parka until summer. Trench coats and moto jackets are a great way to stay warm but dress like you are ready for spring. Nordstrom/Rack has very colorful lightweight jackets that will instantly brighten up your look. Pair the coat with a striped top, cuffed jeans, and a pair of sandals for an effortlessly trendy look
3. Layering with Cardigans
A day does not go by where I am not wearing a cardigan. They are the perfect “I’m cold, but I’m not freezing” clothing piece that you can wear year-round. Layering is key for the in-between weather months. You can layer up on cardigans that will help you stay comfy and warm all day or you can half wear them (draped off the shoulders) when the temperature goes above 50 degrees. My favorite outfit is a long sleeve top underneath a puffy knit cardigan, paired with skinny jeans and flats.
4. Light colored denim
A very easy way to brighten up your wardrobe is to start wearing lighter wash jeans! Old Navy is having a great sale on all denim and they have a variety of different color pants. White jeans are also a very simple way instantly lighten up your look. This spring cropped and frayed style jeans are very trendy and you will have no problem finding them in stores. You can wear a pair of lighter wash jeans with a winter sweater and flats for a perfect transition outfit.
5. Fun colored shoes
I am a firm believer that when you are wearing fun and cute shoes, that you will be in a better mood all day. Shoes like these are fun, frilly and trendy. You could wear these flats with an all-black outfit because your pop of color is from the shoes. Kitten heels, loafers, and espadrilles are the shoes to wear this spring. They may even put an extra “spring” in your step! (hehe)
I have been online shopping like crazy so that I can have a bunch of spring pieces in my closet. I am currently buying floral tops, frayed jeans, more white shoes (can never have enough) and jean shorts! I also am so looking forward to writing a future blog post about transitioning from a spring to summer wardrobe!
