How to Dress for Work When It’s Hot Outside

When you think of office attire, what comes to mind? A grey or black blazer with matching trousers, a chiffon blouse, and a pair of pointed flats? How about a pencil skirt and muted tone cardigan? Your office wardrobe doesn’t have to be that colorless and boring. Thanks to the world of Pinterest we can see that workplace attire can be a lot more fun! Yes, you can still have blazers and trousers but in fun colors, prints, and styles.
As if dressing for work wasn’t hard enough, dressing for the office in summer is even harder. When the weather outside and inside the office building is so drastically different, it can be a challenge to dress appropriately. I definitely struggle with this, when I want to wear a really cute sundress because it’s 80 degrees outside, but at work the temperature drops because they have the air conditioning blasting. I have to remind myself that my outfit doesn’t have to suffer just because I’m trying to dress for two different temperatures. You can have cute cardigans, pastel-colored chino pants, cute open-toed sandals, and much more!

The simplest way to incorporate summer into your workplace dress code is to wear a cute sundress! It can be any color or print and you can pair them with wedges, flats, or sandals. If your office is the North Pole like mine is, try wearing a jean jacket or a pastel colored cardigan over the dress. When you are shopping for work dresses, there are a few things to look out for when before you buy them. First, you have to look at the length of the dress. Does it hit right above your knee or further down? You want to make sure that it isn’t too short. The second thing to look for is if the dress is see-through or not. You can test this by putting your hand on the inside of the dress and holding it up to the light. If you can see your hand, put that dress back on the rack.

A really fun way to bring more color into your work outfit is to have trousers that aren’t black, grey, or brown. When I needed work pants for my new job I went online and found that chino pants were acceptable to wear. Chino’s look and feel like jeans but are 100% cotton fabric, and most workplaces allow them. Old Navy is currently selling “pixie” chinos are cropped and come in a variety of fun colors. Don’t be afraid to branch out and wear bright colored pants. They pair easily with a white or black tank top and brown sandals. Another thing to look for is trousers that have fun patterns on them. My favorite is polka dots and pinstripes!

If it were up to me, I would wear flip-flops all day every day. Sadly, flip-flops are not usually office appropriate. Most workplaces require a more formal shoe. In summer people want to show off some more skin so they’ll wear open toe sandals. The most popular type being the toe sandals that are just like flip-flops but usually have a cute woven design. This season bow slides and espadrilles are trendy and they come in a variety of different colors and styles. The easiest way to wear all these types of sandals is to get them in a neutral color like brown. That way you can pair them with almost every outfit!

There are many different clothing pieces that you can wear to work this summer, pieces that aren’t boring or plain. Don’t be afraid to add a little color or fun prints into your outfit. I personally believe that having a cute and colorful outfit makes me happier and have a better day. What is your favorite item to wear to work when it’s really hot outside?

This is such a handy post! I don’t know how people can wear full suits in the heat. I break into a sweat after 2 intense seconds of power walking to the train!! xo

Skirts are another clothing item that I love wearing whenever it’s hot out, especially a floor length wrap skirt in a light blush color. And yes, you can never go wrong with a dress!

    Great post! x

This is such a great post! I’m working from home presently, but when I worked in an office I lived close enough to walk and hated the commute in the summer because I could never dress nicely and be comfortable. You’ve got some wonderful suggestions here, and you’re right – Pinterest is a great resource!

Yes that situation of walking to work in the summer and still dressing nice can be a struggle. I would be all sweaty and gross before I even got to my desk. I would’ve had to bring a change of clothes!
