Summer Shoe Guide

For the longest time the only summer shoe I thought I needed was a pair of flip-flops. I had them in every color to match whatever outfit I was wearing that day. It wasn’t too long ago (last summer) that I discovered all the different types of shoes I could wear for the hot season. I was overwhelmed at first because I thought I needed every pair to complete my wardrobe. But, I narrowed it down to 5 styles of shoes. You only need these 5 styles of shoes to match any outfit you wear during the summer! Check out the list below to see if any of these shoes are already in your closet!

Sandals for summer might seem like a no-brainer, but there are so many different types of sandals that I wanted to break it down for you all. T-strap sandals are the most common, pictured in the first image below, they have an ankle strap and one piece that go in between your toes like a flip-flop. Gladiator sandals have been around for a while and I mostly have seen them being worn at summer festivals or concerts. They have lace straps that tie around your ankle and depending on how long the strap is, you can tie is as far up your leg as you want! Double strap sandals have become increasingly popular this summer. They have a simple flat bottom and you slide your foot through 2 pieces of leather material that is either in 2 horizontal lines or crossed over one another. Capri sandals are the cousin of the flipflop. They look identical except that Capri sandal is made of nicer materials like leather. I call these “work appropriate flipflops”.

Slides are my favorite type of shoe this summer. They are being sold in such cute styles and they are easy to just grab and run out the door. My favorite styles this season have been bow slides (see picture 1 below). They are feminine and come in a variety of sizes and colors. Also since gingham is my go-to print of basically 2018 I love wearing my gingham print slides from Old Navy. I like buying neutral color slides like black, white, and brown so that when I am picking out an outfit I don’t have to worry if my shoes will match – because pretty much EVERYTHING matches with one of those three color shoes.

The big shoe style that I have been seeing a lot in the last couple of months are Espadrilles. I googled the exact definition of them because I wanted to be sure what I was talking about. But basically, an espadrille is a flat or wedged shoe that has a canvas or cotton fabric upper and rope-like bottom. This shoe style gained popularity this past spring and I understand why. You can wear them with many different outfits and look stylish. Pair them with a cute sundress for an outdoor barbecue, with t-shirt and jeans shorts for when you’re wondering around Target on a Sunday afternoon, or wear them with a blouse and skinny jeans on casual Friday’s at the office.

Flats have always been a part of my wardrobe, they are a staple and will go with almost anything that you wear. This summer season we are seeing a lot of flats that have an ankle strap (see photo 1 below). I have also been seeing flats being sold in an espadrilles style with the rope like bottoms. Flats can be worn with pretty much every outfit and they are fabulous for wearing to work. Mules are basically just open back flats, and I LOVE THEM. Target has some really really cute mules that I wear all the time. They are actually perfect to wear in summer because they will keep your feet cool with the open back but your toes will stay warm from the frigid air conditioning at the office. You can dress them up with a cute sundress or wear them with a t-shirt and skinny jeans.

These 5 different types of shoes will definitely get you through the next couple of months. You might already have one or two of these shoes in your closet already! I bought some really cute boots during the Nordstrom Aniversary sale and I can’t wait to feature them in my “Fall Shoe Guide” that will be coming out in a couple of months!!
What is your favorite shoe trend of the summer?

I do really like espadrilles, but I haven’t actually bought any in eons. I find that they don’t last very long and I stopped buying them. You picked such cute one though, I may just have to pick some up — LA’s summer lasts a bit longer than normal.

    Great post! x

You just haven’t found the right pair then! I did spend around 50$ on my platform espadrilles. I wear them multiple times a week and they still look brand new! You might have to spend a little extra money to get a really good quality pair, but it’s worth it!

They are super comfy and super easy to grab and run out the door when you’re running late. I have a pair in black and white so that they can match with mostly everything in my closet!

When I am not at work or doing something where I need to be dressed up, I will be wearing my flip flops. I have so many pairs that are all over the house 🙂
