Start Building Your Winter Wardrobe Now!

It may not officially be winter yet but that doesn’t mean that you can’t start planning out what you’ll be wearing for the next couple of months. Now winter may be a cold and dreary season where we don’t get to see the sun and we may think that all we can wear is big chunky sweaters but in reality, there are so many other clothing options! I have gone ahead and planned out some basic items that we all need to survive the winter along with some fashion items that will bring some color into your wardrobe. You can think of this as your shopping list and remember the items for the next time you’re shopping online or in stores.

Now the one thing that we all need in cold weather is a good coat! Last year puffer coats were very popular but this winter fur and shearing is in. You can find these types of coats in stores starting in October. You’ll want a coat that is cute but one that will also keep you warm. (You don’t want to freeze!) Another staple item that helps get me through the frigid weather is cardigans! They are like soft blankets that you are allowed to wear to work. The chunkier, the better. Leggings are also an amazing piece of clothing that can help keep you warm when you are brushing the snow off of your car. I like to wear them underneath my jeans if it’s absolutely freezing outside. A no-brainer classic winter wardrobe piece is the sweater! Yes, the oversized, soft, and cozy knit sweater. I try to have these types of sweaters in a variety of colors and patterns so that they are easy to grab when getting dressed in the morning.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean we can’t add some color to our everyday outfits. Red, green, and purple hues really stand out against black and white backgrounds. Try pairing a purple cardigan like the one below over an all-black outfit. Or you can wear colored or patterned pants that will really stand out against neutral colored tops. You can also add some color to your wardrobe with a coat or sweater. Teddy coats are not only fashionable but they are extremely warm and comfortable! Pick one up at your local clothing shopping site, because they are being sold everywhere!

Finding the right pair of shoes this winter will be the difference of freezing cold frostbite feet or toasty warm feet. We all wish that we could wear our super cute wedges and heels all year long, but the reality is that it is too freaking cold to be sacrificing our feet for fashion. I personally love Timberland boots. I went to school in the mountains and we were constantly walking up and down steep inclines that were covered in ice and snow. They are a bit heavy but my feet always stay warm. Another option is to get a pair of think leather boots like the brown over the knee boots featured below. They are made of thick, quality leather that will ensure your legs stay warm. They also pair nicely with sweater dresses and leggings!

What I personally have a lot of is hats and scarves. I like to have scarves in festive holiday colors like red, green, and white. That way they will always match my white or black coat and I will always be in the holiday spirit! Knit hats are also my favorite winter accessory. I really enjoy the beanie style hats with fluffy pom balls at the top, like the grey one pictured below. One accessory that will help keep you warm this season is knee-high socks. I have a grey and a black pair have lace trim at the top. They are great for wearing over your jeans, tights, or leggings inside of knee-high boots. The lace trim adds a cute and delicate detail to any outfit.

We can all easily fall into the trap of just wearing a chunky black sweater with jeans and boots. But this winter season lets not be afraid to add in some color. Whether that be in the form of a fun shearing coat, knit scarf, patterned pants, or statement blazer.
How will you be adding color into your wardrobe this winter?

This was extremely helpful! I like how you said to add color to your winter wardrobe because often times I get stuck wearing neutral tones. I plan to wear more burgundy tones and navy blues. I want a teddy coat, they seem so cozy! Great winter list ā¤ļø

I adore your style! I don’t have the confidence to wear the types of clothing you’ve listed here. I’ve tried changing up my wardrobe and as you say, don’t wear just cable jumpers and jeans. Thank-you for sharing! Definitely got some inspiration here.

I shop at Target, Old Navy, and Nordstrom the most because there are physical stores near my house. But I also love to shop at Jcrew, Loft, Asos, Everlane, Madewell, and Shein!
