The origin of the UGG boots is actually really interesting. The idea of the shoe was originated in the 1950s but they didn’t become relevant until mid-1970s. Australian surfers were wearing the shoes and eventually, they made their way into California surf shops. The shoes really gained popularity when the 1994 Olympic team wore them during the winter games and then again in 1995 when the shoes were featured in fashion shows and through celebrity endorsements.
I was first introduced to UGG boots in high school. Every girl in my grade had a pair of those chestnut colored boots. I got my first pair for Christmas from my mom and I only had them for a week before I frayed the tip of the boot. I was so sad that they had a blemish on them, but I still wore them. The style back then was to tuck your jeans into the boots and pair them with a cool Hollister or Abercrombie hoodie. The way people wear them now hasn’t changed much since 2010 but the way people view UGG boots now is very different.
It has been a while since I was in high school and I have since graduated college and am working at a big girl job and I still own and wear my UGG boots all the time. I had to get rid of my first pair of boots because they were so worn down and falling apart from wearing them so much. I now have 3 pairs of UGG boots that I love very much. I have the boots that are shown in the picture below. When I am out shopping on the weekends I see a lot of people still wearing UGG boots, both men and women. Many people still wear the boots even though others may think that their shoe choice is question
In 2010 when the boots were really popular with the mass markets, they were more of a fashion statement/trend that we wanted to show off to our friends. Fast forward to this year and we are still wearing them but I believe as less of a fashion trend and more for comfort. I wear my boots because they are comfy and easy to put on when I’m are just running out to the store or going to pick up some carryout dinner. People ask me all the time “How are UGG boots still in fashion, how are people still wearing them?” The truth is, is that the boots started as a trend but stuck around because they are so damn comfortable. If you have ever looked at other UGG products you would notice that those items are also super soft and cozy. UGG makes blankets, pillows, towels, slippers, etc and just by seeing that UGG label on them, I know that that product is going to be really soft. I associate the brand of UGG with softness.
My personal opinion is that people who don’t wear boots, don’t understand them. They are the type of person who might’ve never tried on the shoe or who might’ve worn the boots a couple of times when they were first trendy. They don’t get/understand that we wear the boots for comfort. I wear my boots all the time and I feel people judging me when I’m walking around in public, BUT I DON’T CARE. Since my high school days, I have yet to find a shoe that is both cute and comfortable like my UGG boots. So don’t let people’s judgments of your shoe choice stop you from wearing a really comfortable piece of footwear.
You can still tuck your skinny jeans into your UGG boots just like I used to do in high school, but there are many other ways to style your boots in a cute outfit during cold weather. I know that many people have switched out the skinny jeans for black leggings for the ultimate cozy outfit. Pair those with an oversized sweater and grab a cup of hot cocoa because that outfit is my unofficial weekend uniform. You could also wear the tall boots with a sweater dress or midi skirt to keep your legs warm. I look at UGG boots as a very basic wardrobe item that everyone should own. They come in some crazy colors but if you stick to the neutral colors like black, grey, and brown you can wear the boots with literally every outfit!
I own over 50 pairs of different shoes and I am constantly switching out old pairs for new and trendy shoes but my UGG boots have stood the test of time. They have stayed in my closet year after year and I will always pull them out in November to wear until March. So don’t let people boot shame you just because they think you’re wearing an outdated fad. It’s sad really because those people will never know how comfy we all feel when we wear them. It is also worth mentioning that UGG makes a lot of other types of shoes that are really cute that people won’t judge you for, but I felt the need to defend the classic style boot.
*this post is in no way sponsored by UGG, I just believe that people should stop hating the comfy shoe*
