5 Simple Ways to Make Your Home a Cozier Place

When the temperature drops and snow is constantly in the forecast it makes us not want to leave the comfort and warmth of our homes. It’s important to have a cozy and comfortable place to live in when we know that we’ll all be trapped indoors until April. There are simple steps that you can take to make your home appear cozier and feel warmer. These simple decor tips will help you relax and stay warm when it’s below freezing outside. Whenever I go out shopping for home items I always keep these tips in mind so that I can make my home the coziest and most welcoming place.

UPDATE YOUR BLANKETS AND PILLOW

In the summer we love to have lightweight linen and cotton blankets to keep us comfortable but when it gets colder outside, we need thicker fabrics in our blankets and pillows to keep the warmth in. I personally love to have a bunch of blankets all around my apartment. On my couch, there are a collection of fleece, flannel, and fuzzy blankets. I like to layer up on the blankets to make my living room look and feel cozier. Also, when the weather gets cold around October, I like to switch out the decorative pillows that are in various places in my home. I usually have bright colors and printed pillows all around but during the winter months I like have darker colors like reds, greens, navy, and deep purples. I also like to have flannel fabric or furry pillows to add in texture! Having two or three pillows on your couch or bed will make your space more comfortable and warmer.

ADD COZY RUGS

When the weather is cold the floors in our homes can be chilly and cool to the touch. The easiest solution is to just wear fuzzy socks or slippers. What I like to do in addition to wearing those things is put a bunch of rugs on all the non-carpet areas of my apartment. My kitchen is completely tile, so I put a nice area rug in the center of it so that it’ll be warm while I’m cooking my favorite recipes. Now, rugs can get expensive so if you’re on a budget like me, consider layering smaller rugs around your house. One in the kitchen, one down the hallway, an area rug next to the bed, or under the coffee table. Adding rugs to your home will keep the warmth in and make your home cozier. Below are some of my favorite rugs.

USE SOFT LIGHTING

Lighting can really affect your mood so it’s important to have the right types of light in your home. White light can create a bright and harsh atmosphere, so I like having yellow lights in all the lamps. These types of light bulbs create a warm-toned glow in your home that is easy on your eyes. I also like to have a lot of candles around my apartment to make it smell good and to create a glow on the walls. Something else that I recently discovered is Himalayan salt lamps, which are made of 100% pink Himalayan salt and carved out in the middle for a lightbulb. There are several health benefits that these lamps can bring but I love them because of the light they give off. The one I have in my apartment has a dimmer switch on it so that I can control how bright I want it to be. At the end of a long day I will have the salt lamp on and nothing else, it really brings a lot of warmth into my home.

BRING THE OUTDOORS INSIDE

In the winter all the plants and trees outside are dead. It can be depressing to not see greenery when you go for a walk. The easy solution is to bring in some flowers and plants into your home. There are several different plants that can survive indoors and with little water. If you’re like me and kill every plant that you touch, I recommend getting a succulent plant or a cactus. I also like buying flowers at the farmers market every couple of weeks so that I can have some natural color in my apartment. I have also been wanting to buy a palm tree plant to put in the corner by our window so that it can bring some greenery into my house and help to cleanse the air.

DECORATE WITH PERSONAL MEMENTOS

In order for your living space to feel more like a home and to be a comfortable place to come back to every day, you need to add in personal items. This is something that is really simple and easy to do. Pick out your favorite images from your phone and have them printed and framed. If you live in an apartment like me and can’t put nails into the wall, Command 3M strips are a great alternative. I have many photo frames hung on the walls, placed on shelves, and on tables around my apartment. Another thing you can do to make your home feel cozier is to add in personal mementos that remind you of your friends, families, and experiences. Every time I go on a trip, I like to bring back little trinkets that will remind me of that vacation. Having these decorations placed around your home will make the area more your own and you will be comfortable being surrounded by personal memories.

It’s just something about the aesthetic plants bring to rooms, it’s sweet and comforting!🌿 I will certainly look into soft lights because that paves the way for a content feeling too.

Planting my feet on a soft, cozy rug relieves most of my stress at the end of each day! I usually decorate my room with personal mementos too, and I add huggable stuffed toys to my bed. Lovely post ♡

Bringing the outside inside is such a great tip! I find that buying myself a bunch of flowers or a new house plant instantly elevates a place and makes it feel cosier. Thank you for sharing your tips!

looks like i need to do all of these (except the mementos one, I already have tons of photos around my room/house!) but I definitely do need to add blankets, pillows, a rug etc) as my bedroom is seriously lacking! I love the idea of layering rugs too and using softer lighting – I have these gorgeous globe lights from IKEA but I really need some softer bulbs in them! Gorgeous photos too babe! x

I absolutely love this post! I agree with you 100% on all of the above. You’ve read my mind!

Lighting really does have an incredible effect on our mood. Blue (cool) light to me feels sterile like a doctor’s office or jarring outdoor light.

The coziness of soft blankets, pillows and other items is another favorite, just like you said. To me, home is everything. It should be the safe, welcoming space. I’m a homebody anyhow but making it extra special just feels incredible.

Thanks for sharing this. We are definitely on the same page! 🙂

Love having a cosy, snuggly house 🙂
I always have loads of blankets and throws around and I totally agree with your tip to have mementos around. There’s a fine line before the house starts to look cluttered with things, but happy photos and memorabilia from trips does really help to make a home cosy 🙂

Great points! Especially the point about bringing the outside in. I love the scent that comes off of pine sprigs, they give the ultimate cozy feel to those dark winter nights.

I love being at home, so keeping it nice and cosy is important to me 🙂 My lounge has lots of comfy cushions and blankets for those colder evenings in front of the TV. I love it! I really like that you bring back mementos from your trips and put them around the house, that is such a lovely way to remember special holidays and bring smiles! Thanks for sharing your suggestions Lindsey, lovely post! ❤ xx

These are great ideas. I especially love cosy blankets and throw cushions. It’s been ages since I’ve had a decent, fluffy rug though!

Coziness is at the heart of all things that make me smile. Pillows and rugs do, now that I think about it, have a large part in the overall cozy factor. 🙂

These are all wonderful ideas. I love a good, warm, thick blanket to keep me warm through the winter. I also love large, plush, fluffy pillows because they’re so cozy and add the right amount of cozy I prefer. I still trying my hand with greenery, but unfortunately I forgot about the two plants I had and they didn’t survive. So sad!

Oh no about your plants! Maybe you can try your hand at fake plants like me! I have a mix of both real and artificial plants.
