The Fourth of July is meant to celebrate our countries freedom and independence but somehow, it has turned into one of the biggest barbecue/drinking holidays. May and June have been warm but it’s rained a lot, but now that it’s July and 90 degrees, summer is official here and it’s going by quickly. It’s finally really warm, you can go swimming all the time, eat burgers, and basically live in a bathing suit for the next 2 months.
My extended family used to do a big Fourth of July party that I would look forward to each year. We would have a big catered clambake and there was a competition to see who could eat the most. Everyone would make their own desserts and every year I would make the delicious pudding/cookie dessert known as sand. Throughout the afternoon there would be games, scavenger hunts and races that would keep the kids busy. Then we would all watch gather out to the front yard and watch the guys set off a ton of fireworks from the the empty field across the street. It really was my favorite summer tradition, but sadly we all got older and my aunt doesn’t put on the event anymore.
The past couple of year’s my close family has just had their own backyard barbecue complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, fruit, and a variety of desserts and drinks. Then when the sun goes down, we go to the park down the street to watch the neighborhood firework display.
To celebrate the fun holiday you are going to need a couple of outfits to make you look like a walking American flag. Whether you’re planning on relaxing in the sun or are attending a fun party with your friends, you’ll need to show off your patriotic style! Fourth of July means a lot of red, white, and blue, as well as stars and stripes. Below are outfit suggestions that you can put together with items that are probably already in your closet1
BASIC TEE & SHORTS
You can never go wrong with a simple t-shirt, shorts, and sandals outfit during these warmer months. For the holiday you can wear a red or blue tee, white shorts and a pair of white converse shoes. My classic look each year is usually my Old Navy flag tee, solid color shorts and fun flip-flops. Another thing you can do is wear a red and white striped tee with blue denim shorts. This is a super casual way to show that you still care about dressing for the holiday but you don’t want to go all out and buy brand new outfits just to eat hot dogs and watch the fireworks. If you want to go for a dressier casual look, swap out your shorts for a denim button down skirt.
I’m changing up my look this year and going with a funny graphic tee from Target and pairing that with some light wash denim shorts, my circle bag and a cute pair of sandals. I also bought a cool tie-dye red, white and blue tee that I could wear if we continue celebrating the holiday into the weekend.
TANK OR T-SHIRT DRESS
An outfit that I can guarantee that you already have in your closet is a t-shirt or tank dress. If you already have one in a navy blue, red, or striped pattern, you’re all done! My favorite look that I will probably wear to my families barbecue party, is a blue and white striped dress paired with a white denim jacket for when I get cold at night. You can go for a super casual look by pairing flat sandals or flip flops with the dress or have a dressier outfit with wedges or heels. This look is very easy and really comfortable to wear all day long, even if the weather is above 80 degrees.
GINGHAM TOP & WHITE JEANS
A go-to outfit that I have been wearing since last year (no literally, I wrote a whole blog post about it last spring) is gingham and white jeans. It’s such a timeless look and I’m glad the picnic print came back into style last year. For the patriotic holiday, you can wear a blue or red gingham off the shoulder blouse with white capri jeans/shorts, and sandals. Complete the look with accessories like a straw bag or hat and espadrille sandals or sneakers. This look is semi-dressy and people will certainly give you many compliments on your adorable outfit. Switch out the jeans for white short if the weather is a lot warmer where you are!
No matter what you choose to wear this weekend, just make sure you get in some red, white, and blue pieces. This will show people that you are festive and patriotic even if you just showed up the barbecue for free hot dogs.
I hope everyone has a great Fourth of July!!
Your picks are lovely. The dresses from Macy’s and Nordstrom are something I would love to wear for the 4th of July. I hope to be spending time with my family. I don’t know if we are grilling out but I do know we will have a party. I hope you enjoy your time with your family.
I love these outfits ideas!
Such cute ideas! I love the Old Navy tees and always have a few handy for a classic July 4th look. Thanks for sharing!
I buy a new flag tee from Old Navy every year!
I’m not in the US so don’t do 4th July but these are some lovely outfits and if I was to attend a fourth of July party, I’d probably opt for the t-shirt and shorts !
4th of July parties are fun! Maybe you’ll get to go to one some day!
The little round back in the photo is soo cute! 4th July this year in England has a slightly different theme (as it’s the end of our lockdown), but hope you guys have a great time over there!
