For most people their favorite holiday is Christmas or Thanksgiving but nope not me! My favorite holiday is Halloween! Don’t get me wrong, I love a good snuggle by the fire with the smell of fresh Christmas tree pine in the air and “Elf” on a constant loop on the TV, but my favorite holiday, hands-down, is Halloween. Why you ask? Well it’s probably because I spent way too much of my time watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch when I was a little kid or the fact that I’ve always wanted to go to Halloweentown. There is something about all the black and orange, the ghosts, the costumes, and the weather that makes me happy.
Here’s why I love the spooky holiday:
FUN DECORATIONS
I decorate my home for Halloween as soon as the first of September hits. I just love all the decorations that I have, and I love buying new decorations! A lot of what I have I have been collecting since I was a kid living at my parent’s house. My mom let me take most of it because she doesn’t decorate for holidays anymore. My apartment has pumpkins and skulls everywhere, witch bottles, a spell book I crafted, and orange lights. This year I also expanded my Funko Pop collection to include the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus and Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Target also has had some amazing dollar items this season with a $5 fake Ouija board, black glitter tree, and a reversible ghost pillow.
HAUNTED MOVIES
Like I mentioned above, I spent way too much of my time as a kid watching all these spooky movies that have become cult classics these days. I know every line of all the Halloweentown movies and Hocus Pocus is one of my favorites. My dad and I always used to watch Beetlejuice too and then dance to the Banana song at the end of the movie. The 31 Nights of Halloween on Freeform (ABC Family) is also wonderful because I get to watch films that I don’t personally own. Tim Burton is an amazing Halloween producer and his movies are always great to watch on a cold and rainy night. The Addams Family is also a personal favorite of mine because it’s such a backwards way of life and I love it all. Wednesday Addams is amazing. I hope to get a Funko Pop of her next!
WITCHY MAGIC
There is just something about the brisk weather and changing of the season that makes October feel like a special month. Now add in the spirit of witches, ghosts and monsters and you’ll feel the magic in the air. I love watching original Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the new Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, as well as Charmed and any other witch movie. I don’t necessarily believe in their magic, but I am fascinated by the culture behind it. Those movies and shows are also the reason why I adopted two black cats! I also got to travel to Salem, Massachusetts last October and learned all about the witch trials and the history of the town, it was really cool.
TRICK OR TREAT NIGHT
As a kid, your favorite part of Halloween is Trick or Treat night because of all the candy! As a grown adult I still love the night because I enjoy handing out candy to all the little dressed up monsters and princesses. You already know that I go all out on decorations inside my home, but I also make the outside spooky as well. I live in an apartment complex so there are a lot of kids who live here. Every year they are amazed by my decorations and lights, their parents even take pictures of them! I hang blinking lights in the windows, put carved pumpkins out, change all the porch light to orange, and put ghosts all around the front yard area. I set up a chair on the porch, play my Halloween Pandora channel and give out candy for two hours. Yes, it’s cold and kind of boring sometimes, but I love seeing how excited people get about my decorations and letting them pick out their favorite pieces of candy.
CREATIVE COSTUMES
I don’t dress up as much as I would like to but I love picking out Halloween costumes each year and figuring out what I want to be. For the most part I have dressed as a witch because it’s the easiest but in college I was really creative with what I wore. This year I hope to go as Sabrina (the new one) because it’s still real clothing but it’s not how I would usually dress. Some other costumes I would love to go as one year is Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas or Lizzie from Disney’s Lizzie McGuire.
Halloween is my favorite holiday too for all of these reasons. It’s my Christmas! I’ve spent so much money on decor this year and I can’t wait to decorate! Halloween Starts in 2 days in my house…Oct 1!
I have all my plans and decorations ready to decorate our new house this weekend! The outside will be decorated before we have furniture inside our house hahah
YES! I love everything about Halloween – my favourite time of the year, hands down. I can’t wait to see the adorable trick or treaters coming to the door for candy tonight. We’re lucky. While Halloween night has been cancelled in some areas of the province (those that are seeing higher numbers) we have been given the go-ahead here with preventative measures in place (wash hands between trick or treaters, wear a mask, etc.) It a small piece of ‘normal’ in the wild mess that has been 2020.
You and me both! Halloween is hands down my favorite holiday and probably because I had so many wonderful childhood memories surrounding the fall season and holiday like you mentioned 🙂
