A Cozy Autumn Home

It’s that time of year when the leaves start to change, and the weather gets colder. This means that Autumn is here! It’s a wonderful time when apples and pumpkins are popular, Halloween and Thanksgiving are on our minds and we all get to layer up in cozy sweaters and boots. As soon as September comes, I break out my fall decorations and spend an entire weekend setting my home up for the season. I have candles, pumpkins, fake leaves, wreaths, scarecrows, and more decorations that put out.

These decorations make my home look like autumn, but it’s not quite done yet. As soon as the temperatures drop, I like to make certain design changes to my home to really make it cozy. Since we’ll basically be stuck inside for the next 4 months, I like to make the atmosphere as warm and inviting as possible.

Here’s how I do that:

BRING OUT THE BLANKETS! I have a blanket problem, I own 15+ blankets/throws that are all over my home. There’s a bunch on the couch, more on the bed, some at my computer desk and one at the dining room table. I like having them all around because I’m always cold. So when the weather starts to get colder, I bring out most of those blankets plus my favorite one – the heated plush blanket! If you don’t have a heated blanket, you NEED ONE! They are lifesavers for people like me. I just wish I could have one for work because my office is absolutely freezing.

While you’re putting out all these throws and blankets, make sure to pile up the pillows too. I have so many pillows on my couch that there is barely room for us to sit. But it’s okay because I love burying myself in blankets and pillows on a cold autumn night. You get bonus points if you have a fireplace or wood burning stove that you can turn all your furniture towards so that you can feel the warmth.

When the seasons change, I like to change out all my kitchen, dining room, and bathroom linens. I like the towels and placemats to have the coordinating colors. So, for Fall, the hand towels, table runners, and placemats are all deep oranges, reds, and browns. In our bedroom, I will switch our normal sheets out for flannel one and the thin linen curtains will be replaced with thick, cold air blocking ones.

I like having different home décor items for each season because even though the temperature always stays the same inside the home, the décor can reflect the seasons. The first thing I always do when the season changes is go to Home Goods and buy a fall scented candle or 5 haha. I just love smelling the scent of pumpkin or apple spice when I’m cleaning or watching Netflix. Plus the soft glow of candles in a dark room, instantly makes it the coziest room.

Other cozy autumn decorations that you can have in your home are plaid table runners, a bowl full of pumpkins, apples and cinnamon on your dining room table, a fall wreath on your front door and sheepskin rugs in the bedrooms.

These simple changes will make your home look and feel like fall. So warm up a mug of apple cider, wrap yourself in blankets on the couch and enjoy the ambiance of your home!

Aaah I love autumn/fall! I’m like you, I always get the blankets out, the fall-ish home decor, and my scented fall candles out too. Even though it’s still a bit warm here, just getting out the fall things just makes everything seem more cozy and lovely. And I love all the examples you put in here. Now I want to go shopping for more autumn things! lol.

The challenge for me is storage. I’m just renting a place so storage is quite limited. Also, I’m afraid of hoarding since it’s quite easy to get sucked into buying everything I see >.<

I never really change up my decor for autumn (still trying to hold onto summer haha), but I d like the cosy feeling. You can never have too many blankets or pillows to make you all cosy, can you? I bet the candle smells amazing too, love lighting them for the extra cosiness!

    Thanks for sharing!

I don’t have a heated one because my partner would boil to death! But maybe I should invest in one. The colours are just so beautiful in autumn x x x

I’ll admit that with my current home color scheme (mostly blues and greens), it can be challenging to truly decorate for autumn in the traditional manner. The reds and oranges don’t quite match. BUT I’ve found little ways to incorporate autumnal vibes into my house, which makes me really happy since it’s my favorite season. You’ve got some great tips here. I like the idea of extra blankets and pillows!

I am very much like you when it comes to my blanket obsession. I’m sitting here in my chair in the living room right now with a blanket draped over the back of the chair, a blanket folded on the footstool under my feet and another blanket actually being used over my legs for warmth haha! I am a firm believer that you can NEVER have too many blankets around the house!
