It’s that time of year again when food comas are acceptable and eating turkey for breakfast, lunch and dinner is a real thing for a couple of days. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what you have and to gorge yourself with food. Not to mention, gathering with your friends and family to eat, drink and talk about the year we’ve all had.
There’s pumpkin pie, savory stuffing, sweet potatoes, and so so many leftovers. My parents usually hold the Thanksgiving meal at their house which I’ll be attending but I will also be putting together a small holiday meal at my apartment this year. This means getting out the turkey decorations and all the pumpkin candles.
The holiday can be very hectic for people, trying to get a meal prepped for a bunch of people but I’m trying to have a nice relaxing day. So when it comes to getting our home and kitchen ready for the holiday, we must have the proper decorations and table settings. Here is how I have a small cozy thanksgiving at my home.
Even though it’ll just be my and my boyfriend for this meal, I still go all out with decorations. I love having a cozy home and will take any excuse to decorate. I keep pumpkins and gourds from Halloween and I bring out the long garland of fake leaves. The leaves can go on top of cabinets, entry tables, dressers, and television stands. For the table, I make the centerpiece from items that I find outside! There’s a park down the street and I go there to collect pine cones and colorful leaves. Then on the day of our meal, I sprinkle in some berries and orange/apple slices. I love doing this because it really brings in the feeling of harvest into the home and the oranges smell delicious.
The most important thing to focus on (besides the turkey in the oven) is the table that you’ll be eating your meal at! I like to have a small theme going and this year it’ll be turkey’s. It may sound like a no brainer to have a turkey theme at Thanksgiving but it’s more than that. This means that the plates have turkeys on them, the napkins, the centerpiece is a turkey, and the pumpkin pie will probably have a turkey design on it. This year I picked up a really cute set of Rae Dunn turkey gobble plates that we will be eating off of this year. It’s also important to have all the right silverware and drink-ware on the table for the meal. I also found little turkey candle holders on Amazon that will be on the table to set a cozy mood for the meal.
Yes, food is the main focus of the day for many, but don’t try to stress about it. If you overcook the turkey a little or mess up on a side dish, don’t worry too much. The important thing about this day is that you’re together with your friends and family celebrating how thankful you are for the day. This year all that I will be cooking is a small turkey for the two of us, a couple of side dishes of stuffing, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable. There will be wine and rolls along with pumpkin pie for dessert. For my parents Thanksgiving, I will be wearing a cute outfit but for the meal that I’m cooking, I will mostly likely be staying in my pajamas all day. Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be difficult, just enjoy the day and afterward, you can take a nap on the couch!
