7 Pieces of Advice for the Perfect Summer Outfit

summer outfit

Summer is here and that means we’ll all be living in our bathing suits for the foreseeable future right? As much as I would love to hang out by the pool all season long, we do still have to dress up to go places and actually look presentable. *sigh* But just because it’s extremely hot outside, doesn’t mean that you can’t be comfortable and cool in what you’re wearing. Summer fashion means light-weight, fresh, easy, and casual.

My go-to outfits are always casual, comfortable, and cute. I do my best to fill my closet with classic, basic pieces that are easy to wear and can be mixed and matched again and again. I own a nice collection of cute t-shirts and denim shorts as well as many sundresses and sandals. Below is my best advice for what you should wear this summer to stay cool but still be fashionable!

BREATHABLE FABRICS

When it comes to summer and the heat, you want to make sure that the clothing that you are wearing is light and breathable. Synthetic fabrics like polyester trap heat and actually make you sweat more! You’ll want to make sure that your t-shirts, tank tops, and dresses are made from cotton or linen. You get bonus points if those are organic fibers! Breathability is key when the sun comes out to play!

DRESS UP DENIM

A summer wardrobe staple of mine is denim jean shorts, I have them in every wash and style from distressed to boyfriend fit. I usually just wear them with a basic t-shirt but you can pair the shorts with dressier pieces for more fashionable looks. Try your jeans or shorts with a flirty top, cute summer bag, and a pair of bright summer sandals.

BARE YOUR SHOULDERS

With the weather being extremely hot outside, it’s the perfect time to wear all those sundresses that are in your closet! I have short and maxi dresses as well as strappy dresses that show off my shoulders. You can also wear an off the shoulder top that will keep you cool without showing too much skin.

WEAR WHITE

When the temperatures rise, wear the color white. This is the best color to reflect light, unlike darker colors that trap heat and make you feel overheated. Of course, you can mix things up a little with other colors, but opt for lighter pastels to protect you from any uncomfortable feelings caused by the hot weather. You can wear a lovely white day dress, white jean shorts with a fun printed tank top, or simply white t-shirt and denim bottoms.

FUN PRINTS & PATTERNS

During the colder months, I tend to wear more muted solid colors like navy, brown, red, black, or grey. But during the spring and summer, you can wear all the fun and crazy colors and prints that you want too! Try wearing some cute floral print dresses or fun conversational prints like palm trees or food t-shirts. Old Navy has numerous tanks and t-shirts that are fun to wear and are super cute for summer

TRY A NEW COLOR

During the summer I tend to wear a lot of the color white and blue. This year I want to try and mix it up by wearing colors like pink, yellow, and aqua. Try some new colors that you don’t normally wear to help you feel and look fresh for summer. I’ve always struggled to wear the color yellow, but this year I’ll be pairing the hue with other summer neutrals that I already own.

FLOWY STYLES

The last thing you want when it’s over 80 degrees outside, is for your clothing to stick to you. I need my clothes to be lightweight and breathable, especially the outfits that I wear to work in the summer. Be sure to buy flattering but loose-fitting clothes, like these, will allow for better airflow, and consequently, you will feel cooler in your outfit.

Breathable fabrics are essential for the hot weather! I recently ordered a shirt made from Lyocell/Tencel and it’s amazing for the hot weather. So breathable! x
