I grew up in a real farmhouse. It was built in the year 1804 and it’s as old and charming as you may think it is. My mom has it decorated year-round with every rustic looking that she could find at shops and farmers’ markets. We had the “cool farmhouse” decor before it became a huge trend thanks to Joanna Gains from Fixer Upper. Every couple of months my mom and I switch out some of the decor pieces to make our home look more like summer or fall, winter, or spring.
You don’t need to change up the entire room, to make it feel more inviting or to brighten up the area. You just need a few key pieces to really pull the look together. Since you can find more and more farmhouse home decor pieces in stores now, it’s very easy to update your home to look more rustic but also summery. I personally love combining the classic look of farmhouse decor with fun summer beach and floral accents. Below are the manageable things that you can do to update the look of your home to incorporate more summer farmhouse items.
FRONT DOOR
The first and easiest thing that you can update is the look of your front door! Now you don’t have to go crazy and paint it a new color, you just have to add in a fun new wreath and update the doormat. You want your guests to be greeted with warm and sunny front porch area so adding in flashes of color is the way to do that. Try buying or making a sunflower wreath to hang on the door or laying down a funny phrased welcome mat. Another easy decor thing that you can do is to have fresh flowers in wooden planters right next to your door. Flowers are always the perfect decoration for any summer farmhouse.
ENTRYWAY
More often than not, entryways to your home get ignored and are used as an area to collect coats, shoes, and bags. It’s usually an undecorated area that is just meant to accumulate all your stuff. What you can do to update this space but still have it be functional to handle all your belongings, is to add in a bench with storage underneath. A simple bench will give you that farmhouse appeal while still being light and airy enough that it feels summery. Pair our bench with greenery or colorful throw pillows to complete the summertime vibe.
LIVING ROOM
The living room area is where you can start to have some fun with decorating your farmhouse for the season. My favorite go-to summer decor items are those beachy shells and driftwood pieces. You can collect them all in a giant bowl to place on your coffee table or show them on the fireplace mantle. In addition to the seashells, you can also fill a light blue or green glass vase with your favorite flowers. For a fun craft, wrap that glass vase with a bit of string or burlap to increase the farmhouse beach feeling.
BEDROOM
In my bedroom, I always love to switch out the bedding for each season. So for summer, there is a beige comforter with patterned pillowcases. I also have an obsession with throw pillows because they are an easy and excellent way to decorate your home. You can practically place them anywhere in any room. For a farmhouse feel, buy pillows that have a rustic look to them, which could be gingham checks, fancy words, or fun pictures or patterns.
A pillow like the one pictured above or one that features a vintage bike with a basket packed full of colorful flowers is an excellent addition to your farmhouse summer decorations. These throw pillows can be put on a couch, chair, or even a wooden bench to bring in that vintage and rustic aesthetic.
Oooh I absolutely love all this decor! I’m seriously wanting to do a little homeware haul right now!
These are such great ideas! I love the throw pillows you picked out! The farmhouse vibes are strong!!!
Great tips! My apartment’s aesthetic isn’t farmhouse (it’s more like a plant mom’s take on coastal), but these tips are applicable for any type of interior design! x
Oh, I love this style! I’ve been slowly incorporating this into my home and you’ve given me a few more ideas!
All are lovely. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Lindsey. Some interesting tips there, thanks. Up until about a month ago, I’d never heard of Joanna Gaines. Then my wife came across Fixer Upper and we’ve been hooked ever since – really enjoy watching ‘Chip and JoJo’! If you are looking to emulate them then I’m sure you’ll do very well.
I love all of this decor! Definitely brings in those summery farmhouse vibes and I love it! I’m always looking at new cushions for both the living room and bedroom, so this has given me more inspiration!
Thanks for sharing!

Love this! I’m definitely in need of a bit of home decor love!
Such pretty pieces! We have been shopping for couches recently (ours is old and just giving in from use, it happens) and that’s led me down the black hole of throw pillows, blankets, etc. lol! I love the plaid pillow – there’s something about plaid that has me totally hooked as of late!
This looks gorgeous! I love decorating for the seasons and I’ve always been into the farmhouse theme 🙂
So lovely and such easy ideas! I especially love the front door and entry way x
I absolutely love your interior post and this is a really nice style – I’m really big on couches like this. X
This decor is beautiful! My fave flowers are sunflowers and I’ve never thought of having a wreath of them, now it’s going to be a must!
That farmhouse decor is so rustic and inviting. Give me a month out there and a few good books, and that’s my idea of heaven.
I love these ideas! Thank you for providing a variety of prices, as well as make-or-buy options! I will definitely be looking into a couple of these!
I’m the same as you – I love to switch up my bedding depending on the season as I think it makes a massive difference to the overall look of my bedroom
